Gran Torino - film review

Domestic drama set in the USA's industrial heartland. The casual racism of second generation Polish immigrant assembly line worker Walt Kowalski is directed at his south east Asian neighbours. However, as Walt comes to know them better through a series of armed skirmishes it becomes apparent that a shared humanity binds the disillusioned Korean war veteran more closely to his Hmong neighbours than to his geographically and emotionally distant sons. Walt's growing friendship with Thao, the teenage son of the family next door, contrasts sharply with his increasing estrangement from his own son, Mitch.

Symmetrical. Essential viewing.
